About my Mustang

My 1965 Mustang Fastback was initially driven daily by me as purchased, with a 289 A-code engine and Borg_Warner T10 while I accumulated parts over two years for a real transformation into a serious Street/Track road racing fun car. This included a Top Loader transmission, a 9 inch rear axle from a Lincoln Versailles with a Currie Enterprises 3rd member, and a full Global West Suspension set up with tubular A-arms, Del-a-lum bushings, Koni shocks, subframe connectors, a fast ratio steering box and Big Brakes. The car was completely taken apart , stripped down and walnut shell blasted to bare metal. All the fenders were "pooched out" carefully to make room for wider rims and tires... I'm running 16 by 8 inch Vintage 45 mags with 245-50-16 Nitto NT01s currently. The Engine is a 351 Windsor .030 over with a stock crank and 6.5 inch long connecting rods using custom JE pistons. The camshaft is a Crane .520 lift hydraulic roller. Its topped off with Edelbrock aluminum RPM Performer heads and a Performer RPM manifold with a 4150 Holley double pumper. JBA custom headers just clear the shock towers and connect to a 3 inch cross over exhaust system and FlowMaster mufflers. To keep the car lighter I removed back seat and put in a 66 Shelby package tray, rear lexan quarter windows, deleted the dashpad and radio. I replaced the hood with a fiberglass one and went with a Shelby R-model fiberglass apron. I chose a wide-ratio Top Loader to go with a 3.00 ratio rear gear. This works well for what I had in mind. My Stang turned a 13.10 sec. and 108 mph quarter mile at 6,000 rpm in 3rd gear on street tires at L.A. County Raceway. Its really better suited for open track fun at road racing courses. Its a good street car and it runs well on regular unleaded fuel.

Thanks Fritz !
I haven't looked into swapping to struts. But I have seen a wide variety of interesting set ups done on these 1st generation cars... some pretty interesting ideas. If you look elsewhere on this site, you'll see this magazine's tech editor Miles Cook's 1969 fastback which has a marvelous rack and pinion steering conversion along with other upgrades - - really cool.

Looks like a real sweet ride.Did you ever consider using struts? Are coil-overs stronger as your racing?
