About my Mustang

This is my 1966 Ford Mustang coupe (Hardtop). It was born with a 289 2-V 200 H.P. engine with three speed manual transmission and was red (T-code).  I purchased it in 1976 in "RUFFF" shape for $225.  I restored it to mostly stock condition and used it as a daily driver until modification began in earnest in 1980.  I will break the build into sections: Engine, Running Gear, Body, Interior and audio so you can read the stuff that is of interest to you.

***When I first got it on the road in 1984, it was lifted up with front and rear springs, shackles etc. It had a tunnel ram with a pair of 600 Holley's on it and 15" wheels.  Bias ply tires, F-60 15's front and N-50 15's rear.  The wheels are Keystone 5 spoke chrome's.  It's a "real period piece"!  Talk about OLD SCHOOL!!! ***

ENGINE:  The block is a 289 (date casting 10/19/1964) decked, line bored, deburred and bored out .30 over.  TRW 12.5 to 1 pistons are connected to VHS rods that have been magnafluxed and re sized.  A Milodon stud kit holds it all in place.  I should mention that all of the reciprocating parts ( pistons, rods, crank, flywheel, harmonic balancer) were balanced as a unit by Valley Head Service in Ca.  The cam is a Maier Racing Le mans grind solid lift with .508 lift, 318 degree intake, 320 degree exhaust and 104 degrees of overlap.  It uses a double roller timing chain and gears.  The heads are Ford 351 W ported, polished with screw in rocker studs, double wound springs, aluminum retainers, rev locks guide plates, special shouldered head bolts (to attach the 351 heads to the 289) and chrome-molly push rods.  Metal high performance head gaskets were used and high volume 60 P.S.I. oil pump keeps it well oiled.  A McLeod one piece scatter shield holds the 40 LBS McLeod flywheel and 3200 LBS Weber pressure plate fitted with a 10.5" high performance fiber disc.  Hooker long tube headers take the exhaust (via 2.5" tubes) to an "H" crossover tube and into Flow Master "50" series mufflers with exit in front of the rear tires.  INTAKE is by a Edelbrock F-28 air-gap dual quad (2X4) intake manifold topped with two 500 c.f.m.Edelbrock 4-barrel carbs.  A rear mounted 110 gallon / hour Holley fuel pump pumps gas through a 3/8" fuel line to the pressure regulator for delivery to the carbs.  IGNITION: is provided by an Accel 37000 series racing dual point distributor fired by an Accel ignition amplifier. 8m.m. resistor wire carries the spark to the plugs.  The coil is an Accel 140001 super coil.  It is started by a PA performance PMGR high torque mini starter.  The whole thing is held to the frame by Lakewood "Muscle Mounts" motor mounts.  COOLING SYSTEM: is anchored by an aluminum radiator, with a Perma-Cool 14" electric fan and high performance Flow-Cooler water pump.  Spearco water injection helps control pre-ignition.  Attached to the bottom is an 8 quart Moroso oil pan, valve covers are "cobra" and the air cleaner is an Edelbrock 2X4 polished elite.  Braided steel hoses are from Earls and Russel with hose sleeving by Spectre and Magnabraid.

RUNNING GEAR:  The front end features a 1" front sway bar, 620 coil springs, KYB gas-adjust shocks, and SSCB disc brakes and double master cylinder.  Under hood are a chrome, Shelby style Monte Carlo bar and Export brace. a Optima red top battery shares space under hood.  The rear end also has KYB gas-adjust shocks, and SSCB disc brakes.  The 9" rear end is out of an old '68 Ford wagon. It is held in place by 32" weld-on ladder bars and 5 leaf H.D. springs.  The carrier is loaded with .
3.50/1 gears mounted on a Detroit Locker ratcheting spool.  The drive shaft (from the wagon) was shortened and balanced and runs through a drive shaft safety loop.  Because I can't think of a good place to put it ... A Optima yellow top battery is mounted in the trunk.  The transmission is a Borg-Warner T-10 4 speed controlled by a Hurst competition Plus shifter with "pistol grip" handle.

BODY:  The car has Shelby style: Front chin spoiler, rear spoiler, functional side scoops G.T. 350 gas cap, GT 350 side stripes and sequential taillights.  Maier Racing 3.5" front and rear fender flairs were used to gain additional wheel clearance (more on that later).  The paint is House of Kolor Oriental Blue Kandy lacquer (over 60 coats and hand rubbed).

INTERIOR:  The front buckets are Corbeau Targa RS units and the rear seat is a black "pony" replacement cover.  The head liner and carpet are both black original replacements.  To keep people safe a 4 point weld-in roll bar with cross brace was installed.  Gauges: Sun; water temp, oil temp and volt meter are mounted under the ash tray. A Autometer fuel pressure gauge is mounted on the cowl in front of the windshield and a Mallory R.P.M. limiting tachometer is mounted on the steering column.  And the stock dash gauges.  Restraint is handled by R.J.S. 3" 5 point racing harnesses.  WHEELS & TIRES:  Front; 17X9 FR500 wheels with Nitto 245/45 ZR 17's, the rear; 17X10.5 FR500 wheels with Nitto 315/35 R-17 Drag Radials.  Now you know the "why" on the fender flairs!

AUDIO SYSTEM:  Pioneer equipment makes up the majority of the system.  The head unit, 12 C.D. changer, 5.25" front separates (40 RMS each), rear 6.5" rear 4-ways (50 RMS)  and two (2) 12 " sub-woofers (400 RMS each @ 2 ohms).  The sub enclosure is a "Death Box" dual isobaric "clam-shell", 4Th order band pass.  A 4-channel Phoenix Gold amp 75 RMS / channel @ 4ohms is connected to the front and rear speakers.  A Kenwood Excelon class "D" mono-block pushing 919 RMS @ 2 ohms powers the sub's.    Phoenix Gold 12 gage speaker wire is used for all the speaker's.  The amps are wired with 4 gage wire (with in-line fuses), and a EFX battery isolator (in front) keeps everything in order.  A Power Master 150 Amp alternator "feeds the beast".  Under car lighting is done with Varad LED's.

The next project is to put in a power rack and pinion front end ( turning those front 245's with 13.5" wheel is a bear) and a power brake booster ( pushing 4 wheel disc's is also a work out).

I guess I'll leave it at that.  There's lots of other little bits like tri-bar head lights, lots of chrome bits and stuff I just plain forgot!  If there are other photo's you would like to see, let me know and I'll try to get them posted.

What a sick ride!  Very cool, hard to believe it is from Alaska.  It is pretty weird that this has been posted for 2 weeks with no rating or comment.  Great work!  Bill (Anchorage)
